Medical Mission Trip To Nigeria

The ZHB  8th annual free medical clinic in Umuawuchi was nothing but a success.

Planning for this event started about four months ahead with the board members holding a series of meetings and taking a few steps to secure adequate fundings for the trip.

Board members donated generously to it.

We have been doing this medical mission trip annually, and each visit we go we bring a lot of medications, medical supplies and some eyeglasses, clothing, and cloth diapers for children.

This trip takes over twenty-five hours from the USA to Umuawuchi.

ZHB had a local medical team who have been working with us all these years, this team comprises of Doctors, Nurses, Nurses, Aides, Sonography tech, and Optometrist.

Following the current economic constrains in Nigeria, a lot of health care personnels have travelled overseas in search of a greener pasture, and that impacted our medical team.

We lost two key medical doctors who were also great community health care outreach organizers.

But we were lucky to have seven new medical doctors, nine nurses, two nurses ‘aides and a new optometrist join our team. The team provided medical serves to 393 patients.

The inflation rate impacted the cost of drugs and other medical supplies.

Although we had plenty of drugs, and also we received some drug donations from some companies in Nigeria, it wasn’t enough, and there were still some patients that had critical illnesses that needed more intensive medical interventions.

We hope that by April 2025, ZHB will build a maternity hospital and a health care center for this community.

Some of the health care concerns identified in the adult population included anemia in pregnancy, increase in the rate of high blood pressure and malaria.

Malnutrition remains a challenge among the under five years old children.

With the construction of a maternity hospital and a health care center, most of these illnesses will be prevented through health education, appropriate treatment, and close monitoring of age developmental milestone.

It was heartwarming to watch little children dance with joy when they received some goodies such as snacks, coloring papers and pens, shoes, and toys.

The mothers were particularly grateful for our presence and for all we did for them, and they shared their joy and happiness through some of the video interviews.

Some of them also came personally to thank our medical team.

They verbalized the need to have regular visits to the area, as they lack basic health care.

I shared with them that ZHB understands their struggles, and we would continue to reach out to them as much as we can.

I am hoping and praying for more donors to support us so that we can provide more services to this population. Health care is a human right, and no one should live without adequate health care services.

My sincere thanks to all our donors, ZHB board members, and the medical team.

We couldn’t have done this without your support. Your support to ZHB is making a difference in the lives of women, children, and adults in Umuawuchi, Imo State and Nigeria as a whole.

I also want to appeal to all of you to continue to support the vision and the mission of Zita’s healthy beginnings, this is a great cause, and I strongly believe that as we reach out to the less privileged in our society and in our world, we can be sure of God’s abundant blessings every day.

Thank you so very much.
